I started out as a historian of Irish Catholics in Britain, which led to a concern with the politics of the Labour party during the twentieth century, especially its troubled relationship with popular culture. I remain interested in the past and present of British politics and especially that of the Labour party. However, over the last few years I have become increasingly preoccupied with how politics has been represented in novels, dramas and comedies in both Britain and the USA.
This is because I believe that how we think about politics is significantly influenced by how it is depicted on the page and screen.
The blog therefore represents my personal take on all these subjects: it does not of course reflect the views of my employers!
